Important Announcement

Nov 1, 2017

It is with great sadness that we have to announce that Mariposa Primary School will not be able to open in September 2018, and we are unable at present to give any certainty about what our opening year will be.

We know how devastating this news will be to so many families, however the Department for Education and Harrow Council no longer believe that there is the need for a new school in Harrow in the near future.

This will come as a surprise to many of you – just a few years ago, Harrow had one of the greatest shortages of school places in the country, and this shortage was projected to continue to grow as more people moved to the area and the birth rate remained high.

However, since last year, many areas of London – Harrow included – have seen a flattening demand for school places, partly fuelled by people leaving the UK. This, combined with Harrow having expanded many of its existing schools means that whilst there is still a projected need for 5 new reception classes in central Harrow, the only new schools planned will be in line with new housing developments. These new schools will be on much smaller sites than the one proposed for Mariposa (for example, the proposal for a school on the Civic Centre development has just 0.5 acres compared to our almost 6 acres). As you can imagine, this makes them significantly cheaper to develop, but it is likely to be impossible to deliver the type of curriculum that we had envisaged on such a small area; the outside space remaining after the building would be not much larger than a car park.

Whilst the Department for Education have asked us to cancel our plans to open in 2018, we are still in discussion with them about what the future may hold. We are a volunteer-led group, but a huge amount of effort has been invested and significant sums of money have already been spent by the Government developing plans for the school building and site. Plus, our fantastic Head Teacher, Tracey Francis, has been in post since January developing our innovative curriculum, which promises to make an outstanding addition to the quality and diversity of schools in Harrow. No one wants this time, effort and expense to be in vain.

The final decision will be taken by Lord Agnew, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the School System in the next few weeks.

In the meantime, please keep December 5th in your diaries as instead of our planned open evening, we will be holding a public meeting to discuss the future of the school and how we may be able to continue to support families with their children’s education in other ways.

Please feel free to get in touch by email or via our Facebook page.

It is with the greatest sadness that we have to announce that the Schools’ Minister has decided to cancel Mariposa Primary School. Although both the Department for Education and Harrow Council agree that two new primary schools are needed in this part of Harrow, the Council is adamant that the new schools must be on the re-developed Kodak and Civic Centre sites, despite saying last year that they didn’t favour any free school over another. Without Harrow Council’s support, the Minister is not prepared to continue with the project.
